For me Puppy Send offs are the hardest. I’ve hopefully prepared you and the puppies the best I can to minimize the stress of this transition.
Support
I’ve hopefully ensured that you are mentally and physically ready for a new puppy. They are a lot of work and the first month at their new home is the most important. Remember, you are not alone in this. You have all my contact information, don’t hesitate to use it. Some things you may get supported and answered on Facebook. If you’d like it to be private, Email or Message. If it is important, text me. If it’s an emergency, call me.
Prepare your home
You should’ve set up your home and have it puppy proofed (nothing on the floor that you don’t want chewed up). You should have your crate and play area set up. Food, leash, bedding and toys are ready. A vet appointment should be ready (within 72 hours of purchase). The family should’ve discussed what rules you will set for the puppy.
Review the paperwork
Please take a minute to review the contract found in the Puppy Files and review the Nomograph blog again. In my experience, when you get closer to buying a puppy, the brain is only on the puppy and often not on the paperwork, which can be important. The only thing that will change on this contract is the information will be entered (buyer and breeder info, sire and dam and litter info). This is the contract that will be signed at puppy pick up.
Prep your car
Next we need to get our car ready for the ride home. Include a crate and bed. Bring a leash and if you are driving a very long distance, bring a portable play pen.
I will provide you a bag of puppy food, a blanket that smells like mom and siblings, and water. Many times when pups arrive to new homes they get diarrhea. Sometimes this is because of stress. Most times it is a change of water. The microorganisms in my well water will be different than your water source. This is not an option for those of you that are flying with your pup.
Be cautious on really scary things
Puppies go home during their fear imprint period. The puppy may show concern to new things at this stage. This is ok. It is important to keep the puppy safe. You do not want the pup to imprint a fear now, remember, positive experiences.
