Get ready now. You will be tired the first few weeks with your new puppy. Having some things prepared can be a life (and sanity) saver.
• Puppy proof your house
◦ Don’t forget to check things for xylitol (gums, peanut butters, yogurts)
◦ If you have kids: train your kids now. If it's on the floor, it's the dog's.
Puppy can not differentiat between what is his toy and kid's toy.
Ensure to look under bed and other low areas for stray hair ties and kid socks
• Enroll in and review online puppy classes and/or local puppy college
◦ Avidog University has fantastic classes for new puppy owners. You can find their courses on GoodDog. I highly recommend them. I bought them – I wouldn’t recommend anything that I, or someone I personally trusted, experienced.
◦ Local puppy classes or other organized socialization is a must for socializing this litter.
• Determine House Rules and get family agreement
◦ Beds and sleeping arrangements
◦ Furniture
◦ Cues
◦ Acceptable games
▪ (NOT mouth games – IE grabbing pup by the muzzle in play. NOT rubbing games – IE rubbing the puppy quickly to excite it). Neither are acceptable games for this litter. We are working on calm, soft eyes, and no mouthing.
• Set up puppy’s areas: crates, x-pens
• Get gear: ID tag/collar, toys, food, treats, bowls
• Make 1st Vet appointment
• Identify 5 places for dog-free socialization.
◦ Remember our talks on savvy socialization. Until the pup is immune, stay away from high-traffic dog areas. Try banks, box stores, farmer markets, or nurseries instead.
• Find at least 3 safe woods or fields for adventure walks – off leash exercise.
